In this CounselLink 2025 Mid-year Trends Report, Special Edition, compiled with data from January through July 2025, the data shows several interesting developments in Big Law partner fees:
- Hourly rates in the second tier of firms (501-750 lawyers) grew significantly to partially close the gap in billing rates relative to the largest firms.
- A shift in the share of wallet from Big Law to medium-sized firms indicates that general counsel are:
- Not permitting or paying for the continued increases in partner fees at the largest firms
- Negotiating tougher to rein in legal spend, and
- Giving more opportunities to smaller firms with similar expertise to Big Law
